Ouzoud Waterfalls are 160 km northeast of Marrakech — a full private day trip takes 9–10 hours and covers the tallest waterfall in Morocco (110m drop), a guided walk through the gorge, wild Barbary macaques along the trail, and optional swimming at the base, with door-to-door pickup from your hotel or riad. Available year-round, best October to April.
The Ouzoud Waterfalls are the most spectacular natural landmark within reach of Marrakech. Three main cascades plunge 110 metres into a pool of deep turquoise water, feeding the Oued El Abid river below. Standing at the base looking up — the mist on your face, rainbows forming in the spray — is one of those genuinely memorable moments in Morocco.
The journey there is part of the experience. The road northeast from Marrakech passes through the Haouz plain, climbs into the foothills of the Middle Atlas, and arrives at the village of Ouzoud through olive groves that give the falls their name — “ouzoud” means olive trees in the Tamazight language of the local Berber communities.
The trail descends to the base of the falls through terraced orchards and rocky outcrops. Wild Barbary macaques — Morocco’s only native primate — live along the gorge and are entirely accustomed to visitors. They are genuinely wild animals; do not feed them.
At the base, a series of small cafés and platforms positioned directly in front of the falls offer lunch with probably the best view of any restaurant in Morocco. The spray reaches the tables. Rowboats are available to cross the pool and get closer to the cascade — a popular addition that takes around 15–20 minutes and costs a small fee payable on-site.
This is a private trip throughout. Your driver is with your group only. Departure time is flexible and departure at 8:00 AM is recommended for the best light at the falls and cooler conditions on the trail.
Private Ouzoud Waterfalls day trips start from €149 per vehicle — confirmed price provided at booking based on group size and vehicle choice. Optional add-ons: certified local guide (+€30 per group), Luxury Van upgrade (+€30 per group). Contact us via WhatsApp +212 600 316 681 or email [email protected].
Your driver arrives at your hotel or riad entrance. Departure at 8:00 AM is strongly recommended — arriving at the falls before noon gives you the best morning light, rainbows in the mist, and cooler temperatures for the gorge walk before the midday heat. Departure time is confirmed with you the evening before.
A brief stop approximately one hour into the journey for a bathroom break and the option of a roadside coffee or mint tea. The stop is at a service area or roadside café. Refreshments are at your own cost.
The road arrives at the village of Ouzoud through ancient olive groves — you will hear the falls before you see them. Your driver parks at the village entrance. The descent to the falls takes 10–15 minutes on foot down a well-maintained path through olive and fig trees, with the sound and mist of the cascade building as you descend.
Three to four hours to explore the falls at your own pace. Key points in the gorge:
The upper viewpoint — wide panoramic view of all three cascades from above. The trail down through the gorge — Barbary macaques live along this section; they approach visitors freely. Do not feed them and keep bags closed. The lower pool and mist zone — closest point to the falls. Spray reaches the surrounding platforms. Rainbows appear here in the morning light when conditions are right. Riverside café-restaurants — positioned directly in front of the cascade; lunch here is unhurried and the setting is exceptional (not included — budget 80–150 MAD per person). Rowboat crossing — available on-site; small fee payable locally (~20–30 MAD per person); gets you within metres of the cascade.
Your driver meets your group at the agreed point at the village entrance at 3:00 PM. The drive back follows the same route toward Marrakech.
Brief stop in Tamallalt on the return journey — bathroom break, coffee, or a cold drink (not included).
Drop-off at your hotel, riad, or any alternative address in Marrakech.
The Ouzoud Waterfalls are approximately 160 km northeast of Marrakech, in Azilal Province. By private vehicle, the journey takes around 2.5 hours each way via the N8 highway through the Haouz plain and into the Middle Atlas foothills. The road is well-maintained and paved throughout.
The full day trip takes 9–10 hours door-to-door from Marrakech. Departure is at 8:00 AM, arrival at the falls is around 11:00–11:30 AM, departure from Ouzoud is at 3:00 PM, and return to Marrakech is around 6:00 PM. This gives you approximately 3–4 hours at the falls — enough time to walk the full gorge, have lunch, and cross by rowboat if you choose.
October to April is the best period for visiting. The falls are at their fullest following autumn and winter rainfall, temperatures are pleasant for walking, and the gorge is green and lush. Spring (March–May) brings wildflowers and the highest water levels. Summer visits (June–September) are possible but the falls reduce significantly in volume and the midday heat can make the gorge walk uncomfortable. A very early departure in summer is strongly recommended.
Yes — winter (December–February) is one of the most rewarding times to visit Ouzoud. Rainfall in the preceding months means the falls are at their fullest and most powerful, the gorge is deep green, and the crowds are thinner than at weekends in spring. Temperatures in the gorge are cool and pleasant for walking — typically 10–16°C. Bring warm layers for the journey and a waterproof jacket; the mist at the base is heavy in winter. The road to Ouzoud remains open year-round in normal conditions.
Yes. Wild Barbary macaques live freely along the gorge trail and around the falls. They are Morocco's only native primate and are entirely habituated to visitors — they will approach closely and may try to access bags or pockets. Do not feed them, keep food secured, and do not encourage contact. The macaques are a genuine highlight for most visitors, especially families with children.
Swimming in the natural pool at the base of the falls is possible in season. The water is cold year-round. Conditions vary — after heavy rain the current strengthens and swimming may be inadvisable. Local guides and café staff advise on conditions on arrival. In summer, the pool is popular and often crowded on weekends.
The main gorge trail and waterfall viewpoints are accessible and enjoyable without a guide — your Atlas Wings driver provides context on the journey. A certified local guide (+€30 per group) is worth considering for travelers who want deeper cultural and geographical context, who wish to explore the upper gorge and secondary trails beyond the main waterfall area, or who are traveling with children and want a more structured experience.
Yes — it is one of the most child-friendly day trips from Marrakech. The main trail to the falls and the lower gorge are accessible from around age 5–6 with appropriate footwear. Children are almost universally delighted by the Barbary macaques. Ensure children wear closed, grippy shoes — not sandals. Keep a close eye on young children near the pool edge and riverbanks.
Wear comfortable closed walking shoes with grip — the gorge trail involves uneven stone surfaces and can be slippery near the waterfall mist zone. Bring a light jacket (the mist at the base is cool even in summer), sunscreen, and a small daypack. Bring Moroccan dirhams for lunch and any on-site extras — no ATMs are available at Ouzoud village. A change of clothes or waterproof layer is useful if you plan to get close to the falls.
