About this tour

This private 3-day tour departs Marrakech and travels south through the High Atlas to Ait Benhaddou, Ouarzazate, the Dades Valley, Todra Gorge, and Erfoud before reaching the Sahara dunes at Merzouga — with a camel ride into the desert camp on night two. Day three returns via the Rose Valley, arriving back in Marrakech in the evening. Hotel pickup and drop-off included throughout.

Three days from Marrakech to the Sahara is the most complete way to experience southern Morocco without stretching into a longer circuit. The route crosses two mountain ranges, follows ancient caravan roads,
and delivers a genuine Sahara night at Merzouga — one of Morocco’s most remote and rewarding destinations.

Day one sets the pace immediately. The road climbs over the Tizi n’Tichka pass at 2,260 metres, drops into the pre-Saharan landscape below, and stops at the UNESCO ksar of Ait Benhaddou before continuing to Ouarzazate and the dramatic rock formations of the Dades Valley. A local guide joins for the Ait Benhaddou visit, adding context that transforms a walking tour into something worth remembering.

Day two moves east through Todra Gorge — a canyon with walls rising 300 metres from the valley floor — then continues to Erfoud, the gateway to the dunes. As afternoon becomes evening, the vehicle stops at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes and camels take over. The ride into camp at sunset is the moment most travelers remember longest.

Night two is spent at a traditional desert camp at Merzouga — dinner under open skies, the silence of the Sahara, and a sky with no light pollution for hundreds of kilometres. Early risers can watch the sunrise over the dunes before the camels return them to the vehicle.

Day three begins with a drive back through the Rose Valley of Kelaat M’Gouna, where damask rose fields line the roadside in spring, and continues through mountain scenery before the final return to Marrakech.

This is a private tour throughout. The vehicle, the driver, and the schedule belong to your group alone. There are no strangers joining, no shared pickups, and no fixed group pace to match.

Pricing for this private 3-day Sahara tour is confirmed on inquiry — based on your group size and vehicle choice.

Itinerary

DAY 1: Marrakech → Ait Benhaddou → Ouarzazate → Dades Valley

08:00: Pickup in Marrakech
Your driver arrives at your hotel or riad. An early departure is important on Day 1 — the route covers significant ground and the afternoon stop at the Dades Valley is best reached before dusk. Departure time is confirmed with you the evening before.
08:00–10:30: Tizi n'Tichka Mountain Pass
The first two and a half hours climb into the High Atlas on the N9 road, reaching the Tizi n'Tichka summit at 2,260 metres — the highest paved road in Morocco. A scenic stop at the summit for panoramic mountain views and photographs. The road descends through Berber villages, cedar forest, and dramatic gorge scenery into the arid pre-Saharan south.
11:00–13:00: Ksar of Ait Benhaddou + Local Guide Arrive at the UNESCO-listed ksar — the most recognizable earthen fortress in Morocco and a former trading post on the ancient caravan route from Marrakech to Timbuktu. Your included local guide leads the visit: the labyrinthine alleyways, defensive towers, granaries, and the climb to the summit for valley views. Films shot here include Gladiator, Game of Thrones, Lawrence of Arabia, and The Mummy. Allow 90–120 minutes.
13:30–15:00: Ouarzazate
Continue 30 km east to Ouarzazate — nicknamed "the Hollywood of Africa." Brief stop at Kasbah Taourirt (entry optional, approx. 10 MAD/person) and past Atlas Studios, where full-scale film sets from major productions are still standing. If your group wishes to tour the studios, this can be arranged on-site (approx. 50–100 MAD/person, not included).
15:00–18:30: Drive to Dades Valley
The road continues east through increasingly stark desert scenery, passing the Skoura palmery — a dense oasis of date palms — before arriving at the Dades Gorge. The rock formations here are called the "monkey fingers" locally, carved by millennia of erosion into extraordinary curved towers above the gorge road.
19:00: Overnight in Dades Valley
Check in to your guesthouse or riad in the Dades Valley. Dinner included at the accommodation.

DAY 2: Dades → Todra Gorges → Erfoud → Merzouga

08:00: Breakfast and Departure from Dades
Breakfast included at your accommodation. Early departure to make the most of Day 2 — the longest and most varied day of the tour.
09:00–10:30: Todra Gorge
The Todra Gorge is one of Morocco's most dramatic natural sites — a canyon where the river has cut through the High Atlas, leaving sheer limestone walls rising 300 metres on both sides. At the narrowest section, the gorge is just 10 metres wide. The light is best in the morning. A short walk through the gorge is included.
11:00–13:30: Drive through the Draa Tafilalt Corridor
The route east from Todra passes through the Tafilalt region — one of the most ancient oasis zones in Morocco, historically the crossroads of trans-Saharan trade. Stops at fossil and mineral market stalls along the route are possible if your group is interested. Reach Erfoud by early afternoon.
13:30–14:00: Erfoud
Brief stop in Erfoud — the last major town before the Sahara. Good opportunity to purchase local supplies, lunch (not included), or browse the trilobite fossil workshops for which the town is known.
15:00–16:00: Merzouga Village & Dune Viewpoint
Arrive at Merzouga at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dune field. First view of the Sahara — the dunes here reach up to 150 metres and stretch for kilometres into Algeria. A brief stop for first photographs before the camels arrive.
16:30–18:30: Camel Ride into the Desert Camp
Mount your camel at the dune edge. The ride into camp takes approximately 45–60 minutes, arriving in time for sunset over the dunes. Your guide leads the caravan through the dune crests to the camp location.
18:30 onwards: Overnight at Merzouga Desert Camp
Your traditional desert camp for the night. Dinner served in the camp — tagine, salads, Moroccan bread, mint tea. After dinner, the guides lead music and drumming around the fire if conditions allow. The Merzouga sky at night, without light pollution for hundreds of kilometres, is extraordinary. Sunrise wake-up available for those who wish to climb a dune before the camels return.

DAY 3: Merzouga → Rose Valley → Marrakech

06:30 (optional): Sunrise Over the Dunes
Optional early wake-up to climb a dune for the Sahara sunrise — one of the most memorable moments on the entire tour. Not compulsory, but strongly recommended.

08:00: Camel Ride Back & Breakfast
Camel return to the vehicle at the dune edge. Breakfast included at a nearby camp or guesthouse before departure.

09:30–12:00: Drive through the Rose Valley (Kelaat M'Gouna)
The return route passes through the Valley of Roses — Kelaat M'Gouna and the surrounding Dades region. In spring (April–May), the roadside damask rose fields are in full bloom and the air carries the scent for kilometres. Outside bloom season the valley is still beautiful — green against the arid plateau, with a rose water distillery open for visits.

12:00–18:00: Scenic Return through Atlas Valleys
The final stretch retraces ground across the High Atlas, with an opportunity for a lunch stop (not included) in one of the roadside villages or towns en route. Your driver can recommend reliable options.

18:00–19:30: Return to Marrakech
Drop-off at your hotel or riad in Marrakech. Exact arrival time depends on departure point, lunch stop duration, and road conditions. Typically between 18:00 and 20:00.

Frequently asked questions

Merzouga is approximately 550 km from Marrakech by road, following the route south through the High Atlas, Ouarzazate, and the Draa Tafilalt corridor. By private vehicle the journey takes around 8–9 hours of driving time in total, which is why the 3-day format spreads the route across three days with overnight stops in the Dades Valley and Merzouga desert camp.

Night one is spent in a guesthouse or riad in the Dades Valley — a comfortable, private room with en-suite facilities. Night two is in a traditional Berber camp at Merzouga — a furnished tent with beds, blankets, and shared sanitary facilities within the camp. The desert camp experience is the highlight of the tour for most travelers.

The camel ride to and from the Merzouga camp takes approximately 45–60 minutes each way and is manageable for most adults and older children. Those with significant back problems or mobility limitations may find the ride uncomfortable. An alternative 4x4 transfer into camp is possible — please advise us at booking if a camel ride is not suitable for any member of your group.

Breakfasts are included on Day 2 (at your Dades guesthouse) and Day 3 (at or near the Merzouga camp). Dinners are included on Day 1 (at the Dades guesthouse) and Day 2 (at the desert camp). Lunches throughout the tour are not included — budget approximately 100–150 MAD per person per lunch at roadside restaurants en route, which your driver can recommend.

October to April is the recommended period. Temperatures in the Sahara are comfortable — warm by day, cool to cold at night in winter (bring warm layers for December–February evenings). Spring (March–April) adds the bonus of the Rose Valley bloom and full waterfalls in the Atlas. July and August are extremely hot in the desert region — daytime temperatures at Merzouga can exceed 45°C — and are not recommended unless your group departs very early and paces the journey carefully.

Yes — it is one of the best Morocco experiences for families. The highlights (camel ride, desert camp, Ait Benhaddou, Todra Gorge) are all genuinely engaging for children. The private vehicle means stops can be adjusted to your family's pace. Please advise children's ages at booking so we can recommend the right vehicle and any camp considerations.

Essentials: comfortable walking shoes, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), a warm layer or light jacket for desert nights and the Atlas pass, Moroccan dirhams for lunches and optional entrance fees. In winter (December–February), pack a proper warm jacket — Sahara desert nights can drop to 5°C or below. Lightweight desert-appropriate clothing for daytime. A small backpack for the camel ride into camp. Phone charger and power bank — the camp may have limited charging.

The tour is fully private — your group only. Maximum capacity is 7 persons in a Comfort Van or Luxury Van. For groups of 1–4, an Economy Sedan is available. Please confirm your group size when requesting a quote and we will confirm the appropriate vehicle.

Yes. As this is a private tour, certain elements can be adjusted — for example, spending more time at Todra Gorge, adding a 4x4 excursion in the dunes at Merzouga, or adjusting the return route. Contact us via WhatsApp +212 600 316 681 or email [email protected] to discuss your preferences before booking.

The 3-day format adds significant value over a 2-day tour. It includes Todra Gorge and the Draa Tafilalt corridor — two of the most scenic stretches of southern Morocco — which a 2-day itinerary cannot accommodate without severe time pressure. It also allows a more relaxed pace at each stop, a full night at Merzouga camp, and the return via the Rose Valley. For travelers who have 3 days available, it is the recommended choice.
